What to expect in major markets
| Market | Typical source | What it's good for |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Ocean bills of lading are the main source | Strong on who shipped to whom. Usually sea freight only, and value is often missing. |
| India | Customs records | Useful product detail and values. Search by 8-digit HSN works well. Name visibility varies. |
| China | Trade statistics and shipment sources | Availability varies by product and period. Check the sample carefully. |
| United Arab Emirates | Available through partner-country records | Often built from the other side of the trade, so it may be partial. |
| European Union | Mostly statistical, with mirror data | EU privacy rules limit company names. Mirror data from trading partners often fills gaps. |
A general guide. Availability changes, so your free sample is the real test.
Why coverage isn't the same everywhere
Trade data comes from what each country chooses to release. Some publish line-by-line customs records with values and names. Others release bills of lading, which are good on parties and ports but thin on price. Many publish only totals.
When a country doesn't release its own records, the other side of the trade can fill the gap. A country's imports can be seen through its partners' exports. This is called mirror data.
